"Honk For Peace" case to get hearing

Are police enforcing a law for the public safety's or to silence speech? The American Civil Liberties Union says enforcement of a anti-honking ordinance in Burnsville, MN is meant to chill free speech that the police don't like the content or the means of how it is delivered.

Burnsville police ticketed Robert Palmer for honking his horn in response to a war protest sign that said "Honk for Peace". Palmer faces up to 90 days in jail for the June 30, 2009 incident.

ACLU Attorney Howard Bass explains that Burnsville police have apparently upped the severity of charge in an attempt to quiet Palmer. The case has a hearing today (January 6, 2010) and has not yet been scheduled for a trial.
